How to Care for Your Sunglasses
Investing in sunglasses means more than just the price tag. Sunglasses across different brands often encounter the same problems due to improper wear and care, and when caring for them right, a seemingly cheap pair of sunglasses can last you years beyond what you might expect.
Clean Them the Right Way
It’s a good idea to clean your lenses regularly, but doing it wrong can cause scratches or delamination. Here are a few tips to avoid that:
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of household cleaners like Windex, bleach, or alcohol wipes. These can strip the coating off your lenses or cause clouding. Instead, always opt for rinsing them in freshwater. Any added chemicals can react with the lens coating and cause delamination.
- Use a Microfiber Cloth: Microfiber cloths are designed to trap dust and oils without scratching your lenses. Never use paper towels, napkins, or the edge of your shirt, as these are abrasive and can leave small scratches over time.
- Rinse First: Before wiping, give your sunglasses a quick rinse under water. This removes any dust or debris that could scratch the lenses when rubbed.
Store Them Safely
One of the easiest ways to extend the life of your sunglasses is to store them properly:
- Use a Case: Whenever you’re not wearing your sunglasses, store them in a protective case. Hard cases offer the most protection, especially if you’re carrying them in a backpack or purse. Soft cases take up less space and also keep your lenses safe against scratches.
- Avoid Leaving Them in the Car: Heat can warp frames and damage lens coatings. The inside of your car can get extremely hot on sunny days, so avoid leaving your sunglasses on the dashboard or on the car seat.
Hinges and Screws
The small details can make a big difference. Hinges and screws often get overlooked but are essential to your sunglasses’ functionality.
- Tighten Loose Screws: Over time, screws in the arms or around the lenses may loosen. Use a small screwdriver to tighten them up as needed.
- Keep Hinges Lubricated: If the hinges on your sunglasses feel stiff or squeaky, a drop of silicone-based lubricant can help keep them functioning smoothly. Avoid oil-based lubricants, which can attract dust.
Salt, Sand, & Sunscreen
Some of the most common causes of lens delamination and scratches occur with these three S’s:
With the right care, your sunglasses can last for years while still looking sharp and doing their job. Remember: a little extra effort goes a long way. By cleaning, storing, and handling your sunglasses properly, you’ll keep them performing at their best and looking great.
